Miniatures

Featuring a cast of seven dancers and a unique set of boxes, ladders, perches and pedestals, acclaimed group work Miniatures explores both the precious and the precarious. Set to a rich and powerful electro-acoustic soundscore by Eden Mulholland of Auckland band Motocade, Miniatures weaves through a gallery of images and scenes in which dancers interact with a landscape and architecture that is constantly changing. In turns, they find themselves confined or hidden, balancing precariously on tiny blocks and then released, hurtling through the space with reckless abandon. Subtle integration of lighting into the action creates the feeling you are staring deep into a labyrinth of secret places where images drift up at you out of their hiding places in the darkness - as if they are a collection of antique surprises that have been stored away in an old attic and discovered on a rainy afternoon.

“Performers perch on plinths and pose on pedestals as living breathing objects.  They are boxed into tiny spaces like insects in a specimen case or stacked onto shelves like clothing waiting for summer to return.  They then move through space , in and out of one another’s arms, imprinting the air with a fleeting presence.”
-- Raewyn Whyte (City Mix June 2004)

Miniatures was first presented in Auckland in May 2004 and then subsequently on a national tour in 2005 that included seasons at The Edge in Auckland, Te Whaea in Wellington and the Applaud Christchurch Arts Festival. Miniatures received funding support from Creative New Zealand.
