Terrain
is a celebration of humanity, scale and landscape in which the tiny, the giant and the all too human collide in a captivating performance that weaves together dance, physical theatre and visual imagery. Terrain is set in and around an innovative and continuously evolving installation made up of a kitset plywood stage, layers of artificial grass, lighting stands and an array of miniature props (including toy cars, trains, tanks and dolls). The most unique feature of Terrain is its scale. With a small stage measuring only 3x3m and several miniature scenes, Terrain is designed for a small audience of usually no more than 30 that sit up close on two sides and engage intimately with the action. The music, all played on vinyl, is nostalgic with vintage songs by Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Brian Eno, Cole Wilson and the Tumbleweeds, and others. As a performance installation it negotiates the traverse between theatre-based dance and the idea of a visual art exhibition in motion.

Winner of the "Best production/technical award" at its premiere at the Wellington Fringe in 2004, Terrain has since been performed over 50 times throughout NZ. It has featured at the Otago Arts Festival (2004), tempo - Auckland's festival of dance (2004), Applaud Christchurch Arts Festival (2005), Taranaki Arts Festival (2005) and the Nelson Arts Festival (2005), with funding support from Creative New Zealand.
