Locked
Choreographed by Julia Milsom
Performed by Julia Milsom and Paul Young
A girl and boy are precariously balanced. They’ve got a lot they want and need to say but just can’t quite get it out. Instead, through the subtle ebb and flow of their power play, the words seep out of their bodies in nervous twitches or masculine postulating, dancing in the spaces between. Who is submitting? Who is dominating?
Our perceptions are turned upside down.
We can be the cruelest to those we love the most.
Locked in its essence explores balance: within ourselves and our relationships. Balance is not a still point, it is constantly moving, only when it gets locked does it becomes stiff and breakable. This work specifically looks at a girl and boy on the brink of breaking and how they manage to shift the balance within their relationship for a stronger outcome. This work can be read as a metaphor for a shift in power between technology and nature in the 21st Century, it can be read as a challenge of gender stereotypes –particularly in regards to physical female strength, or it can be seen as a co-dependant relationship, but who is the victim and who is in control?
New Zealand’s Best Male and Best Female Contemporary Dancers of 2007 perform this highly physical, intense and at times playful work by emerging choreographer, Julia Milsom, at Dance House as part of You Are Not Alone, You’re Just in New Zealand, June 5th-7th.
